Description

POLAND. Danzig. 4 Ducats, 1645-GR. Danzig Mint. Wladislaus IV. NGC AU Details--Obverse Graffiti.
Fr-20; KM-Unlisted; H-Cz-1851 (R2); cf. Gum-1607 (RR; this date unlisted); K/K-253 (R3); Parch-D14. Weight: 13.84. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust right, wearing ornate lace collar and Order of the Golden Fleece; Reverse: Veduta of Danzig, with radiant tetragrammaton above; in exergue, coat-of-arms with leonine supporters. An IMMENSELY RARE multiple Ducat issue, this intriguing "city view" type offers many distinctive characteristic within the urban vista, with the town hall, churches of St. Mary and St. John, and civic gates and fortifications all defined. Though garnering a details designation on account of the parallel marks in front of the king's goatee, this aspect may be easily overlooked, as it clearly serves as a reminder of the large denominations value with respect to Ducats (IIII), and was contemporaneously done at the time of its manufacture very similar to other multiple Ducats of its era. Quite detailed and alluring, with intricacy given even to the more mundane aspects, like the king's collar. Golden-orange, and with some deeper hues accentuating the devices, this impressive relic of the post-Thirty Years' War period should undoubtedly generate immense enthusiasm among the most advanced collectors of Polish or world gold RARITIES more broadly.
