ETHIOPIA. Ethiopia - Austria. Off-Metal Gold Medallic Taler of 20 Ducats Weight, "1780"-SF (ca. 1950). London Mint. Haile Selassie I (Ras Tafari Makonnen). PCGS MS-62.
Fr-Unlisted; KM-T2 (under Austria). Featuring the oft-restruck famous Taler design of Maria Theresa, this impressive modern rendering to the weight of 20 Ducats was reportedly struck for Haile Selassie, then emperor of Ethiopia, to be given out as gifts to acquaintances of importance. Given their RARITY and paucity within the market, it is fairly clear that the overall number produced, or at least, their survival, must be quite small indeed. Undoubtedly a must for the advanced collector of gold issues, Ethiopian coinage, or the expansive varieties of the restruck Talers of Maria Theresa.
