Description

BOHEMIA. Planned Canonization of John of Nepomuk Silver Medal, 1720 (in chronogram). PCGS AU-58.
Donebauer-4645. Diameter: 44mm. Obverse: Mantled bust facing slightly right, wearing biretta; Reverse: Papal coat-of-arms of Clement XI. Most attractively toned, with a delightful gunmetal gray nature and some enchanting hints of cobalt and burgundy spread throughout. A SCARCE and alluring type, this medal celebrates the planned canonization of Jan Nepomucký, the patron saint of Bohemia. Though his actual elevation to sainthood occurred in 1729 under Pope Benedict XIII, accounting for this type often being miscataloged and misattributed to 1729, the type does celebrate the planned event under then-Pope Clement XI, explaining the rendering of the chronogram (=1720) and the reference to Clement's coat-of-arms upon the reverse.
From the Augustana Collection.

Estimate: $700.00- $1000.00
