1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 53-j, W-5290. Rarity-4. Outlined Shield, Largest Head. AU-53 (PCGS).
144.8 grains. An all-time favorite for many New Jersey collectors, with a high relief and lifelike horsehead that makes this obverse unique. Choice frosty chocolate brown with smooth, even surfaces. Just a beautiful copper, with spectacular surfaces and nearly pristine fields. Denticles frame the left side of the obverse and reverse. The central devices are well defined, and the visual appeal is unbeatable. This is a superb example, one that will delight the specialist and novice alike. The SHI census includes two gems, the 2019 EPU PCGS AU-55+ (sold at $7,800), an EF+, and six additional EFs. This piece has to fit into that census somewhere.
