Description

1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 44-d, W-5235. Rarity-4. Outlined Shield, Sleigh Runner. EF-40 (PCGS).
144.3 grains. A handsome example, one that ranks among those generally considered Condition Census. Highly glossy medium brown with attractive golden tan overtones. Mostly smooth and glossy, without a trace of post-striking corrosion. Both sides show scattered vertically-oriented striations, as struck, most notable in the lower half of the obverse. The reverse is ideally centered and is surrounded by a full complement of denticles, while the obverse lacks them only in the upper right quadrant. This is a really pretty specimen of these dies. Syd Martin's 44-d was ex Eric Newman. Graded EF-40 (PCGS) in our August 2022 sale, it brought $3,120. Its overall look and appeal were pretty similar to this coin. At the time, we mentioned: "This probably deserves a place in the Condition Census, and if not there's little daylight between this and the top six. The Maris-Garrett-Partrick coin, was graded EF-45 (NGC) when it sold in May 2021. Dittmer's was the same grade when it was offered in May 2022, and our offering of the E Pluribus Unum Collection included a PCGS EF-45 that probably wasn't quite as nice as this one overall. The SHI Census is populated entirely by EF coins of one sort or other."
PCGS# 766277.
From the E Pluribus Unum Collection.

Estimate: $1500
