1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 35-J, W-5125. Rarity-6-. Deer Head, 1787/1887. VG-8 (PCGS).
140.6 grains. A popular but extremely elusive variety, one almost always encountered in low grades. Mottled dark mahogany with finely granular surfaces. The upper horsehead is bold, though the absolute centers are swollen into oblivion, as usual. The date and its bold overdate characteristic are plain, framed by an arc of denticles below the obverse. The reverse is not well defined, but there may be some evidence of undertype near UNUM. The overall look and quality of this piece is pretty similar to the Norm Peters coin, a PCGS VG-10 that brought $2,640 in November 2021.
