1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 30-L, W-5090. Rarity-4. Deep Chest, Outlined Shield. EF-45 (PCGS).
147.6 grains. An exceptionally bold specimen of a variety that is barely collectible in grades EF and above. Even and glossy dark chocolate brown with somewhat lighter devices. Obverse denticles extend from 9 o'clock to 2 o'clock, while the border frames the reverse from 1 o'clock to 8 o'clock. The devices are exceptionally well defined, owing to both the early die state, before the obverse sinking began, and just a basic lack of wear. A glass will find some trivial granularity, but the overall visual impact is superb. The best one of these to sell lately was probably the Ted Craige - Syd Martin coin, which brought $5,280 in our sale last summer as a PCGS AU-53. The first EPU coin, graded EF-45 (PCGS), was described as "finely granular" and seems inferior to this coin overall.
PCGS# 767899.
