Fr. 197a. 1863 $20 Interest Bearing Note. PMG Very Fine 20.
Dated March 7, 1864. Track & Price reports that there are just 26 examples of this Friedberg variety known to collectors, all grades considered. Depicted at left is allegorical Victory, whilst a bust of Abraham Lincoln is at right which was engraved by Henry Gugler. At bottom center is a mortar, which was engraved by James Smillie. Dark green underprint at center with dark black primary design and red seal/serial numbers. Intricate design details showcasing geometric patterns. The back of the note is printed in a dark forest green ink with a prominent diamond shape at center which encases the Legal Tender clause and "XX" counters. This series of notes was issued during the Civil War, and bore a 5% interest per annum, and were Legal Tender at face value. This Friedberg number is difficult to locate, as auction appearances are sparse. We have not offered this type to our bidders since our March 2018 Baltimore Auction. PMG comments "Minor Edge Restoration".
