COSTA RICA. Banco Nacional de Costa Rica. 5 Colones, 1937. P-198a. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
This is the lowest denomination, the second date for the 1937/1938 provisional overprint series, and the first variety for the type which features the overprinted signature title at left of Presidente. This note was overprinted on P-189A. This note is a miracle of survival in this state of preservation. Just 15 notes have been encapsulated by PMG for this variety, with this note sitting proudly atop the population report with the following consecutive note. The design at center is of workers loading a train with a shipment of bananas. The primary design is in a dark purple color, with light yellow/green comprising the undertint at center. The back design is found in the same purple color as the front. Rarely encountered even close to this state of preservation. Any collector of Costa Rican currency seeking the best-of-the-best should jump at the opportunity to acquire this piece.
