1848-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-Unlisted. Reverse Die State II. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC.
Warm honey-orange surfaces retain traces of luster on this generally bold and minimally marked 1848-D half eagle. This is an underrated issue in the Dahlonega Mint half eagle series due to a mintage of 47,465 pieces. It is actually one of the more challenging coins in this Southern gold series to locate in any grade. The present example in EF-45 will appeal to advanced collectors looking to improve upon the typically encountered VF survivor. An unlisted die pairing, this coin combines Winter Reverse O with a different obverse die than Winter 22. Here, the date is placed slightly farther to the right with the left edge of the digit 1 over the right side of a denticle. In its earlier die state, Reverse O is the rare D/Low D variety of the 1848-D. In Die State II, however, the first mintmark has been effaced through polishing or die wear.
