1856 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-55 (PCGS).
This boldly struck and satiny example exhibits just a trace of friction appropriate to the grade. Vivid deep honey-orange surfaces display faint traces of pale pink iridescence that add to the eye appeal. As a Philadelphia Mint issue near the beginning of the series, the 1856 is often regarded as a more readily obtainable three-dollar gold piece in today's market. In reality, this issue is quite scarce and underrated, especially relative to the 1854 and 1855, and even more so the 1874 and 1878. A find for the astute gold specialist.
