1858 Flying Eagle Cent. Large Letters. Snow-6, VP-005. Doubled Die Obverse, Low Leaves (Style of 1858), Type III. MS-63 (NGC). CAC.
Warm tan-olive patina blankets both sides of this satiny, smooth-looking example. A bit too subdued to support a higher Mint State grade, yet choice at the MS-63 level, and of further desirability for the dramatic obverse doubling along the left border. There is a shallow obverse strike through (as made) interfering with the detail at the letters AT in STATES, but otherwise we note sharp to full striking definition. Rick Snow (2014) describes this as "a very dramatic doubled die. These are very scarce with only a few seen to date...The finest known is a MS64 graded by NGC. {64, 63, 55}"
