Description

1840 Liberty Head Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS).
It is difficult to us to imagine a more attractive, more obviously original 1840s eagle at the AU-53 level than this Fairmont Collection coin. It is a suitably lustrous, frosty coin with razor sharp to full striking detail throughout the design. Noticeably prooflike in isolated field areas, as well. Only the strongest bids will be competitive when bidding opens for this thoroughly appealing example. From a mintage of 47,338 coins, the 1840 eagle is a challenging condition rarity at the AU level and above. Produced at the height of the "Hard Times" period of economic uncertainty, these coins saw heavy use in circulation as few people were financially able to save examples. David Akers noted that he had not personally seen an Uncirculated 1840 eagle. In more modern times Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2008) expanded on this theme when they wrote, "The 1840 eagle is an underrated date that is almost impossible to find in Mint State." For the serious student of Gobrecht's Liberty Head eagles, opportunities such as this premium About Uncirculated offering are worthy of serious consideration.
