1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. O-101a, T-7. Rarity-3. VG Details--Graffiti (PCGS).
This is a handsome coin with superior eye appeal for the assigned grade. Both sides are richly toned in dove-gray, the reverse with intermingled olive around the periphery. The strike is nicely centered and well executed, all design elements boldly outlined and appreciable. While a concentration of adjustment marks in the center of the obverse is as made, faint initials in the field areas around the portrait account for the PCGS qualifier. There is also a faint graze arcing through the center of the portrait that we mention for accuracy. Tompkins Die Stage 1/5. While 23,464 1794 half dollars were struck, perhaps just 600 or so examples remain of the nation's premier half dollar issue, a figure that encompasses all known Overton varieties and grades. In comparison to offerings of the 1795 date, half dollars of 1794 are few and far between in the auction marketplace. There is a lot about the offered coin that will please a budget minded collector, and we anticipate that it will see spirited bidding at auction.
