1879 Four-Dollar Gold Stella. Flowing Hair. Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, JD-1. Rarity-3. Gold. Reeded Edge. Proof-63 (ANACS). OH.
Obv: The Flowing Hair design by Charles E. Barber. Head of Liberty with flowing hair faces left with the date 1879 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and the inscription * 6 * G * .3 * S * .7 * C * 7 * G * R * A * M * S * encircles the border. Rev: Five-pointed star, or Stella, is inscribed with the denominations ONE STELLA and 400 CENTS. The Latin mottoes E PLURIBUS UNUM and DEO EST GLORIA are above and below the star, respectively. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border, and another expression of the denomination FOUR DOL. is inscribed along the lower border. Bright and beautiful, the surfaces are dressed in vivid golden-orange color that yields to warm olive-honey undertones at indirect viewing angles. Otherwise sharply defined, a touch of softness to the central points and associated planchet striations are noted - typical of the issue. Nicely mirrored in finish with superior eye appeal at the assigned grade level. The old style ANACS holder attributes this coin as a "Restrike." This is a curious way of identifying it as one of the 700 or so additional Flowing Hair Stellas that the Mint struck in early 1880, using 1879-dated dies. The aforementioned planchet striations in the centers are further proof that this coin is from that mintage, for which the Mint used shaved half eagle planchets. As an attractive Choice representative of the denomination, this specimen comes highly recommended for inclusion in an advanced gold type set.
