Original Roll of 1923-S Buffalo Nickels. (PCGS).
One of the rarest and most remarkable Buffalo nickel offerings that your cataloger (JLA) has cataloged for auction in the last two decades, this is quite possibly the final original, intact roll of Mint State 1923-S Buffalo nickels extant. Writing in the 2000 edition of the reference The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, in fact, David W. Lange makes no mention of original rolls for this issue. Instead, the author's comments regarding hoarding for the 1923-S, as with so many mintmarked issues in this series, is confined to low grade, well worn examples pulled from circulation during the 1940s and 1950s. While sufficient Mint State coins have been certified by PCGS and NGC to suggest that many rolls were preserved by contemporary numismatists, virtually all of these must have been broken up long before the turn of the 21st century. In today's market, offerings for Mint State 1923-S nickels are always for single coins or, in large auctions or at major conventions, a few examples at best. That this is an original roll is beyond doubt and confirmed by the matched appearance of the individual coins and the tight grade range returned by PCGS. All examples are lower to upper Choice Mint State quality, their surfaces displaying light champagne-gold and/or pale silver iridescence to satiny mint luster. Striking detail is generally bold, although most coins are a bit soft on the reverse at the bison's head and shoulder - typical of the issue. Counts by certified grade are: -(1) MS-64+ (PCGS). -(7) MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. -(17) MS-64 (PCGS). -(5) MS-63+ (PCGS). CAC. -(4) MS-63 (PCGS). CAC. -(6) MS-63 (PCGS). An exciting and exceedingly rare offering in today's market, and worthy of a realized price far in excess of the sum of the individual coins in their respective certified grades. (Total: 40 coins)
