Description

1858 Flying Eagle Cent. Small Letters, Low Leaves (Style of 1858), Type II. MS-66 (PCGS).
This glorious example offers full, satiny mint luster and silky smooth, virtually pristine surfaces. It also delivers beautiful light pinkish-apricot color, as well as razor sharp striking detail. Our multiple offerings here at this grade level notwithstanding, the short-lived Flying Eagle cent as a type is rare in premium Gem Mint State preservation. We anticipate strong competition from discerning bidders for this thoroughly appealing 1858 Small Letters. Although they have not received much attention despite detailed discussion in Rick Snow's 2014 Flying Eagle and Indian cent attribution guide, the reverse hub types of the 1858 Flying Eagle cent are just as interesting as the obverse types. On the offered coin, there is evidence that a Type III (Open 3) Low Leaves reverse hub was reworked with the Type II (Closed E) denomination punch.
PCGS# 2020. NGC ID: 2279.
PCGS Population: 17; 7 finer (all MS-66+).

Estimate: $12000
