Description

1879 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-65+ (PCGS). CAC.
Those who appreciate both originality and premium quality would be wise to pursue this offering with vigor. It is an exquisite premium Gem Proof from the second year of Morgan dollar coinage. The obverse exhibits an overlay of mottled olive-rose and cobalt blue to a base of antique silver tinting, much of the underlying color shining forth prominently as the surface dips into a light. For the equally appealing reverse we note light silver-mauve iridescence with warmer sandy-gold and steel-blue highlights at the border. Striking detail is razor sharp over even the most intricate design elements. The mintage for the date is widely accepted as 1,100 pieces. By Proof Morgan dollar standards the 1879 is an obtainable issue, but only if one is willing to accept a piece in the Proof-60 to Proof-64 range. Even in basal Proof-65 the 1879 is scarce, while coins that grade any finer are rare and only infrequently appear at auction. With coveted CAC approval, this captivating Proof-65+ specimen is sure to see spirited bidding among discerning collectors.
PCGS# 7314. NGC ID: 27Z2.
PCGS Population: 2; 21 finer in this category (Proof-68 finest). CAC Population: 4; 5. The former total includes coins certified both Proof-65 and Proof-65+.
From the Collection of James Allaire Millholland, 1842-1911.
