1900 United States Assay Commission Medal. By Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan. JK AC-44. Rarity-5. Silver. MS-65 (NGC).
33 mm. Exceptionally vivid, this bold matte-like specimen exhibits gorgeous toning in olive-blue, pinkish-rose and antique gold. Mint records indicate that 40 silver impressions were delivered from these dies in 1900, along with at least one restrike in 1906. Scarce, and especially with this quality, which is superior even to the Keusch Collection specimen that was cataloged as Choice Uncirculated in our (Stack's) November 2008 sale. Worthy of the strongest bids.
From our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the David W. Dreyfuss Collection, April 1986, lot 5053; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Virgil M. Brand Estate, March 1990, lot 58; Spink's Collector's Sale of January 2009, lot 3239. Brand and Spink sale lot tags included.
