CORINTHIA. Corinth. Uncertain Colony. AR Stater (8.47 gms), ca. 345-307 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5.
Pegasi-494. Obverse: Pegasos flying left; Reverse: Helmeted head of Athena left; axe behind neck. This intriguing and RARE Stater offers well-struck detail and eye appeal. The surfaces retain abundant luster and the coin is overall satisfyingly well-preserved. As this piece lacks the ubiquitous koppa of Corinthian issues, it is unlikely to have been struck in Corinth. While Pegasi categorizes examples with this reverse symbol together with barbarous issues, the high production quality and rather fine style of the dies make it more likely to be an emission from one of Corinth's many colonies.
