AEGINA. AR Stater (12.08 gms), ca. 525-475 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 5/5. Marks.
HGC-6, 429; SNG Cop-502. Obverse: Sea turtle, head in profile, with thin collar and row of dots down its back; Reverse: Incuse square with 'windmill' pattern. This exceptionally well-struck Stater displays a nicely centered obverse turtle in high relief. The reverse incuse punch is slightly muddled and there are some noted marks on both sides. Although the surfaces show some minor crystallization, which is typical, they are attractively toned to a deep gray. A wonderful and very attractive example of the popular "Sea Turtle" series of Aegina Staters.
