GERMANY. Saxony (Ernestine). Taler ("Flip Cap" Taler), ND (1507-25). Annaberg Mint. Friedrich III "the Wise," with Johann & Georg. NGC EF-45.
Dav-9709A; KM (MB)-109. Variety without mintmark. So-called on account of the "flip caps" worn by the Elector of Saxony (Friedrich, on the obverse) along with his brother and cousin (Johann and Georg, on the reverse), this crown exhibits even handling throughout with solid detail remaining. It also portrays the split of the Duchy of Saxony, in that Friedrich and Johann were members of the Ernestine line ( sons of Ernst and defenders of Martin Luther ), whereas their cousin Georg was a member of the Albertine line ( a son of Albrecht, who was a brother to Ernst, and staunchly opposed to the Reformation ).
From the Augustana Collection.
