PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, VF Details, Countermark: EF Details.
KM-Unlisted; Basso-56; PNM#6-Unlisted; PNM#16-280; PNM#21-VIII-97; Cacho-Unlisted; Gil-5-4-3-III. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834 and suppressed 31 March 1837 (by decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark: Type VI; crowned Y.II. within circular incuse. Applied to the obverse of a 1829-Do RL Mexico Republic 8 Reales (KM-377.4). A surprisingly elusive host, we have on the present piece recorded for this date. The countermark is somewhat shallow on moderately worn host displaying mottled gray patina. A couple of small scratches on the reverse account for the details designation, but are hardly a distraction. Despite its shortcomings a handsome and presentable example of the type on a popular and desirable mint.
