GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Spain. 8 Reales, ND (1840). PCGS Genuine--Holed, EF Details. Countermark: EF Details.
KM-111.6; cf. Jovel-Type V (for basic type). Issued by decree of 31 October to 20 November 1840. Countermark: Type II, radiant personification of the sun above mountains. Applied to the reverse of a 1683-BR, Segovia Mint 8 Reales of Charles II (KM-191.3). A VERY RARE and seldom encountered host for the type, this specimen presents an alluring tone with great offsetting to the devices. The countermark, though somewhat weak, is still clearly identifiable, and the noted hole-- a rather commonplace aspect for these issues --is easily overlooked.
