MEXICO. Oaxaca. War of Independence. 1/2 Real, 1812. Oaxaca Provisional Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS AU-50.
KM-166 (this coin plated); Cal-1362. An EXCEEDINGLY RARE Oaxaca piece, this stunning cast issue not only delivers elusivity, but is also supplemented with a condition that is essentially unheard of for the type. This contention is supported by the present example being the finest, and only, yet certified by PCGS. The details are well formed and escape any symptoms of weakness or excessive pitting that often characterize cast issues from this time. A steely gray color coats the planchet, with some lighter areas seen, along with a touch of shimmer to the metal. A piece that expresses much beauty and charm, and should serve any specialist in Mexican War for Independence coinage well, especially when considering its plating in Krause. A 1/2 Real that is without peer, and one that should essentially be considered irreplaceable.
