WHITE II // JUNE 14, 1965 above a facsimile signature of then Mayor Richard J. Daley. Issued on the occasion of a visit of White and fellow astronaut James Mc Divitt who participated in a parade, along with Vice President Hubert Humphrey, honoring the two astronauts who manned the Gemini 7 mission in which White became the first American to walk in space. Less than two years after receiving this medal, White was to perish - along with Virgil Grissom and Roger Chaffee - in the Apollo accident at Kennedy Space Center.
