Lot of (32) Contemporary Cast Counterfeit Connecticut Coppers.
Included are: (6) 1785 Mailed Bust Left; (2) 1786 Scholar's Head; (3) 1786 Mailed Bust Left; (2) 1787 Small Head; (1) 1787 Mailed Bust Left; (14) 1787 Draped Bust Left; (2) 1788 Draped Bust Left; (1) 1788 Mailed Bust Right; (1) 1788 Mailed Bust Left. One piece worthy of individual mention is a 1787 Miller 21-DD with a large and ornate "Scituate" countermark. Many of these have been attributed to die variety by Mike Ringo, a fascinating exercise since these are contemporary copies and not emissions of the mints officially issuing Connecticut coppers! (How many others out there collect contemporary cast counterfeits by die variety?) Most all of these are clearly contemporary casts in copper or brass, though one might argue that a few are just genuine coins whose surfaces imitate the appearance of cast coins. Given the large quantity of Connecticut Coppers issued, it is not surprising that Mike Ringo gathered the largest number of contemporary cast counterfeits within this series; this gathering of 32 pieces may very well be the largest collection of this colonial esoterica gathered in one place in the modern era. Condition ranges from AG to Fine for these crudely made coins. This is a must see, sold as is, no return lot .
