Description

1870-S Liberty Head Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS). CAC.

Captivating rose-honey surfaces are undeniably original and thoroughly PQ for both the issue and the assigned grade. They are lustrous with a lovely, frosty texture that reveals no marks of consequence. Boldly to sharply struck overall with plenty of eye appeal. The 1870-S is one of many unsung rarities in the Liberty Head eagle series, with just 8,000 pieces produced. As with all San Francisco Mint eagles of the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, the 1870-S circulated extensively and suffered a correspondingly high rate of attrition. Of the 80 to 100 survivors accounted for at PCGS CoinFacts, most grade no finer than VF. The Eliasberg-Bass specimen is unique in Mint State (PCGS MS-61); it has not been approved by CAC as if this writing. The Fairmont Collection specimen offered here is one of the finest certified examples in today's market. It is a Condition Census example that represents a significant find for the advanced gold enthusiast.

PCGS# 8659. NGC ID: 264V.

PCGS Population: 7; 12 finer, just one of which is Mint State (MS-61). CAC Population: 7 in all AU grades; 0 in all Mint State grades.

From the Fairmont Collection - CBL Set.
