1894 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-65 (PCGS).
Beautifully preserved with vivid rose-gold color, this lovely Gem double eagle also offers sharp striking detail and bountiful mint luster. The surfaces are remarkably pristine, confirming this coin as among the finest known for the circulation strike 1894 double eagle. The mintage for this issue was 1,368,940 pieces, up more than one million coins over the previous year's tally of double eagles at the Philadelphia Mint. Most examples found their way overseas in banking and other transactions, and large numbers of 1894 double eagles have been repatriated in recent decades. We estimate some 15,000 to 25,000 Mint State examples of the date can be found today. However, most grade MS-60 to MS-62; premium quality survivors, as offered here, are rare.
