GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (ca. 1083-86). Winchester Mint; Aethelstan, moneyer. William I 'the Conqueror'. PCGS AU-58.
S-1257; N-848. Paxs (BMC viii) type. Obverse: Crowned and armored bust facing, holding scepter and breaking inner circle; trefoil on shoulder to left; Reverse: Cross pattee, with circumscribed P - A - X - S in angles. Displaying a rather interesting mix of cobalt, olive, and gunmetal gray, this well struck and handsomely preserved example offers tremendous originality and stands as an excellent overall survivor.
