1670 British Colonization Medal. By Roettier. Betts-44, MI.203, Eimer-245, Rulau-E50A. Silver. AU-55 (NGC).
42 mm. A lovely example with vivid, mottled toning in rose-gray, antique gold, steel-blue and orange-russet. Boldly stuck with just a touch of softness to the central obverse high point. The obverse of this type features conjoined busts of King Charles II and Catharine of Braganza. The English king's marriage to the daughter of King Joao IV of Portugal in 1622 gave his kingdom a foothold in South America (Brazil) and the East Indies.
Ex Rudman Collection.
