1856-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 39-FF. VF-20 (PCGS). OGH--First Generation.
This piece retains an uncommon amount of frosty mint luster for the assigned grade. There is rub to the high points, especially on the obverse, but considerable sharpness remains. Pretty orange-gold color, as well, light hairlines and a curiously bright appearance suggest that the VF-20 assessment represents a net grade of a lightly cleaned coin on the part of PCGS. Still, this is a visually appealing piece and a desirable survivor of "one of the scarcest and most underrated half eagles from [the Dahlonega Mint]," as observed by Doug Winter (2013).
