1840 Liberty Head Half Eagle. Broad Mill. AU-55 (NGC).
Satin surfaces reveal appreciable remnants of the original mint finish as the coin rotates under a light. The detail is bold to sharp over most design elements, and the color is a handsome blend of deep olive and orange-honey. The Broad Mill examples of the 1840 half eagle are far scarcer than their Narrow Mill counterparts, the diagnostic of the former variety the unusually broad rim around both sides. This issue as a whole is scarce to rare in all grades, especially those above the EF level.
PCGS# 8194. NGC ID: 25SA.
