1796 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-65, B-5. Rarity-4. Large Date, Small Letters. VF-35 (PCGS). OGH.
This wonderfully original example exhibits blended charcoal and steel-olive peripheral highlights to dominant dove-gray patina. Pretty cobalt blue, brick-red and antique gold undertones flash into view as the surfaces dip into a light. Nicely struck and well centered, plenty of bold detail remains at the Choice VF level. The second most available of 1796 dollars behind only the BB-61 die marriage, most of the estimated 800 to 1,400 examples of BB-65 are found in mid-level circulated grades, as here. This piece, however, is far finer than the typically offered survivor and is sure to sell for a strong premium. BB Die State II.
