1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-24. Rarity-2. Broad Collar. MS-62 (NGC).
An exciting offering for the specialist in Reeded Edge Capped Bust half dollars. Writing in the 2012 reference A Registry of Die Varieties of Reeded Edge Half Dollars: 1836-1839, Dick Graham relates: "I have seen a few GR-24s with an oversized and extended planchet, the reason for which I have not been able to ascertain, so keep an eye out for one of these in your searches. The planchet size will be 1.245'', the reverse dentils will be elongated and stretched to a shallow rim, and the legend will be drawn and thinner. The enlarged planchet is what will bring them to your attention first and foremost." NGC recognizes this special variant of the 1837 GR-24 attribution, although PCGS does not. This is only our second offering for an NGC-designated Broad Collar example, the first a VF-30. This Mint State piece exhibits moderate, mottled toning to softly frosted surfaces. All major design elements are sharply rendered, the peripheries showing the distortion of detail mentioned by Graham. Eagerly anticipating inclusion in an advanced collection of this brief half dollar type.
