Description

1892 United States Assay Commission Medal. By George T. Morgan. JK AC-36. Rarity-5. Silver. MS-65 (NGC).
33 mm. A handsome matte specimen richly toned in a blend of pewter and mauve-gray. Fully struck with expert surface preservation that will please even the most discerning collector. The Mint delivered at least 25 silver impressions from these dies in 1892 to fill the medal cases that it purchased on February 8 of that year. The dies were put to use in later years, accounting for at least one silver restrike in 1906. Interestingly, most silver strikings of this type that we have handled in recent years have been impaired due to light wear or cleaning. The only exceptions are the present example, the PCGS Specimen-64 from the Larry Baber Collection sold in our March 2021 Auction, and the Mint State specimen from the Collection of Charles E. Barber that sold as lot 4845 in our (Stack's) January 2010 New York Americana Sale. A rare offering for the specialist.
