Description

FRANCE. Napoleon I/Decennial Prize in Science, Literature, and Fine Arts Silver Medal, 1810. Paris Mint. UNCIRCULATED.
Bramsen-985; Julius-2323.By Andrieu & Denon. Diameter: 67mm; Weight:178.80 gms. Obverse: Laureate head left; Reverse: Minerva seated left, holding wreath in outstretched hand and second wreath on lap; to right, garlanded altar with eagles at corners surmounted by palm fronds and wreaths. Edge : Plain. An INCREDIBLE RARITY within the Napoleonic series, this medal is almost never seen in silver, with the Julius specimen being the only other such example in this metal that this cataloger could locate. Quite large and impressive, with a very powerful portrait and majestic pastel iridescence atop the lustrous gunmetal gray surfaces. Undoubtedly, a piece that the specialist in this vast and popular series needs to consider.
