SWEDEN. Christina Silver Medal, ND (1745-60). PCGS SPECIMEN-67.
Hildebrand II, p. 560, 50. Regents of Sweden series. Diameter: 34mm. Obverse: Laureate, helmeted, and armored bust right; Reverse: Legend and date in ten lines. Undoubtedly one of the more popular rulers in Sweden's history, at least from a numismatic standpoint, Christina is presented here in warlike garb, similar to Pallas-Athena. Swiss-born Johann Carl Hedlinger (1691-1771) was trained in Paris and later became the court medalist in Stockholm, where he produced numerous historical medals on commission. His portraits are often viewed as some of the most elegant and well-known, and he contributed greatly to his series of "Regentlängd," or "regent lengths,"--a series that provided portraits and brief biographies of the Swedish monarchs from Björn på Håga through Fredrik I.
