About as close to technical perfection as one can possibly hope to achieve on an issue from the 18th century, this tantalizing Gem radiate with brilliant appeal and attractive toning. Swiss-born Johann Carl Hedlinger (1691-1771) was trained in Paris and later became the court medalist in Stockholm, where he produced numerous historical medals on commission. His portraits are often viewed as some of the most elegant and well-known, and he contributed greatly to his series of "Regentlängd," or "regent lengths,"--a series that provided portraits and brief biographies of the Swedish monarchs from Björn på Håga through Fredrik I.
