JAPAN. Copper 5 Rin Pattern, Year 32 (1899). Osaka Mint. Mutsuhito (Meiji). NGC MS-64 Brown.
KM-Pn30; JNDA-06-32; JC-Unlisted; Jacobs/Vermeule-Y101; Bank of Japan Collection-36. This enchantingly produced piece displays a bold strike and a good patchwork of minty red brilliance. The striking is slightly enigmatic, as the general design was adopted--slightly modified--17 years after this pattern was produced during the reign of Taisho, albeit at a reduced weight. Nevertheless, it remains the only example of the date and type to have been certified by either NGC or PCGS, with most examples evidently being housed in museum collections. A fantastically RARE piece, and near the pinnacle of Japanese types.
