Description

JAPAN. Oban (10 Ryo), ND Man'en Era (ca. 1860-62). Emperor Komei. PCGS MS-63.

Fr-7; JNDA-09-11 (6A); Bank of Japan-Vol. 4 # 93; JV-Unlisted; Hartill-Unlisted; KM-C-24a.2; ANS Collection-1957.172.1954. Mintage: 17,097 inclusive of both Type I and Type II. Type II, Machine made crenellations; security edge. A stunningly beautiful example of the last Oban produced by Japan, represents the type and the entire series well with its tremendous state of preservation. The machine made crenellations are deep and evenly spaced, showing a precision and uniform appearance that distinguishes it from all other types of Oban with hand made crenellations. The obverse Kiri crest stamps are deeply impressed with a razor sharp precision. The ink signature of Goto Tenjo is nearly fully complete, with only a few patches of the underlying gold flan underneath. The reverse crest stamps, and control stamps are as the obverse stamps, deeply impressed and presenting beautifully sharp details. Though a more common Oban, this example is excessively beautiful far beyond what is normally seen for the type, with most examples presenting major ink loss and handling. An exceedingly beautiful example of the type, and one would be hard pressed to find an example as beautiful as this particular Oban.
