Greenport, New York. Original $1 Fr. 380a. The First NB. Charter #334. PMG Very Good 10.
An Original issue $1 from the First National Bank of Greenport NY (Charter #334) is an important offering. As the only bank in the Nassau / Suffolk County area to issue First Charter notes, its importance to collectors of notes of that area cannot be overstated. Located on the far Eastern tip of Long Island, it was first settled in 1692 and was originally named Winter Harbor, Stirling. An important whaling and shipping center, it was widely used for "rum running" during Prohibition. The present note is well-worn, typical of First Charter issues. Its offering in a March, 2005 auction brought $7,951, and while we don't expect to exceed that record, we expect a mid four-figure bid for this rarity. PMG comments "Minor Repairs."
