Stamford, Connecticut. $20 1902 Red Seal. Fr. 639. The First NB. Charter #4. PMG Very Fine 20.
Chartered in June, 1863, the First National Bank of Stamford was one of the first and longest-lived of the National Banks, continuing to issue notes through the end of the series in 1935. Only two Red Seals from this bank are known; a $10 and this $20. With lightly toned paper, good red overprint and sharp dark pen signatures, this note appears to be a quite pleasing, evenly worn example. A minor repair, which we believe is a small closed tear at the left margin, detracts very little from the overall eye appeal of this note. From our May 2006 sale where it realized $4,025. PMG comments "Minor Repair."
