Description

1865 Liberty Head Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS). CAC.

As one of the finest certified and most appealing 1865 eagles that we have ever offered, this premium About Uncirculated example would serve as a focal point in any numismatic cabinet. Boldly defined throughout, with both sides retaining sharp striking detail in the more recessed areas of the design. The original lustrous finish is largely intact. Deep honey-gold color exhibits some pale pink patina. This would be considered a beautiful eagle no matter what the date. However, the fact that it hails from a key Civil War era issue adds greatly to its appeal. Continuing the trend begun early in the Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint produced only 3,980 circulation strike eagles in 1865. This is certainly a very scarce issue, with fewer than 100 coins believed extant at all levels of preservation -- perhaps as few as 50 to 75, according to the PCGS CoinFacts estimate. Even so, the true rarity of the 1865 comes to the fore in the finer circulated and Mint State grades. Just two Uncirculated coins are confirmed to exist (PCGS MS-63 and NGC MS-60) and in CAC-approved PCGS AU-53 the present example is high in the Condition Census. A highly significant offering from the present installment of the Fairmont Collection and worthy of very strong bids.

PCGS# 8641. NGC ID: 264F.

PCGS Population: 9; 10 finer, just one of which is Mint State (MS-63). CAC Population: 2; 0.
