1878-CC Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. VF-35 (PCGS). CAC.
An engaging piece with vivid pinkish-rose highlights on dominant deep honey-olive color. The surfaces are remarkably smooth for a CC-Mint gold coin that saw considerable commercial use, and there are really no marks or other blemishes worthy of concern. Well defined overall with considerable sharpness to the more protected design elements. The 1878-CC was produced to the extent of just 9,045 pieces, typical of many 1870s Carson City Mint gold issues. This premium quality Choice VF survivor has much to recommend it to the collector seeking a somewhat more affordable, yet still technically superior example of a conditionally challenging half eagle from the Old West.
