1924 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. MS-67 (NGC).
This Superb Gem is a true miracle of survival and a gorgeous representative of the iconic Saint-Gaudens type. The surfaces exhibit lovely golden wheat hues with hints of satiny reflectivity in the fields. A matte-like texture enhances the overall luster and the strike is razor sharp throughout. Simply outstanding quality and eye appeal for this popular issue that usually comes with significant marks and abrasions. Just four coins have been graded finer by NGC, emphasizing the true significance of this MS-67 (NGC) specimen from the Zito Collection. The 1924 is one of several post-1916 issues in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series that was exported in quantity. This is fortunate for today's collectors since the coins that were shipped overseas escaped the fate of the gold coins that remained in federal vaults -- mass destruction through melting in 1937. Widely represented in repatriations beginning in the mid to late 20th century, the 1924 has become one of the most plentiful Saint-Gaudens double eagles. While 4,323,500 were struck, only about 5% survive today in Gem condition or finer. We caution bidders that at the Superb Gem level of the present piece, this issue develops into a significant condition rarity. A remarkable bidding opportunity that will appeal to advanced collectors.
