1863/2 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-66+ Cameo (PCGS). CAC.
An absolutely stunning Gem of this highly elusive Proof silver three-cent variety. Intensely mirrored fields form a splendid backdrop to fully impressed, satin-textured devices. Deep steel-blue iridescence frames gold and blue patina across the high points. Superior in both execution and preservation. A very rare variety of this Civil War issue with fewer than 50 coins estimated to survive. Breen calls these overdates "restrikes" in his Encyclopedia (1988) but gives no reason for this assumption. Most are found in grades of Proof-65 or lower and lacking any Cameo contrast. As such, this PCGS Proof-66+ Cameo with CAC approval is one of the finest specimens certified and it would make an impressive addition to the finest numismatic cabinet or Registry Set.
