GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1555. London Mint. Philip and Mary. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details.
S-2501; N-1968. Obverse: Opposed busts of Philip and Mary; Reverse: Arms of England surmounted by large crown. If coins could talk, this one would have one of the most interesting stories to tell. Nicely struck and deeply toned, one immediately observes the obverse tooling in the form of deep slash marks. While not beautiful, they are interesting in that they are very old, as attested to by toning within the cuts. Philip and Mary were never particularly popular on account of their Catholicism, and quite likely a Protestant paid their respects to both monarchs with this defacement of their portraits. An interesting piece of authentic English history.
