MEXICO. Charles IV/Sombrerete Bronze Proclamation Medal, 1791. NGC MS-64 Red Brown.
Grove-C-209a. By G.A. Gil. Obverse: Rightward facing bust of Charles IV; Reverse: Mountain formation. Glowing red color emanates from near-Gem with strong luster, great strike and choice surfaces that hold no distracting marks. A single dark toning spot on back is worth noting, but does not effect the overall appeal. One of the more captivating designs in the series, this type features an unusual rock formation as the focal reverse design. While unstated on the medal, this almost certainly was chosen is reference to the unique rock formations in Sombrerete, Zacatecas that today make up part of the Sierra de Organos National Park.
Purportedly ex: Paris Mint Museum.
