MEXICO. Charles IV/Guanajuato Miners Gilt Bronze Proclamation Medal, 1790. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, Unc Details.
Grove-C-76. By G.A. Gil. Obverse: Sashed bust of Charles IV right; Reverse: Interior view of mine. Extremely bright with prooflike gleam in the fields and strong detail over the design. Struck from broken dies, a crack can be seen bisecting both sides. The tooling appears behind Charles IV's head where someone apparently attempted to smooth the appearance of the die crack. Despite the flaw, a breathtaking medal with an unfathomable amount of engraving talent displayed in the reverse design. Previously sold for $660 hammer in a 2012 Sedwick auction with no mention of the tooling.
Ex: Sedwick (10/2012) Lot # 1737.
